Why Semantic Layers Matter

Daniel Brentt·November 20, 2025·5 min read

The semantic layer is the difference between AI that guesses and AI that answers correctly.

A semantic layer encodes what your business actually means by revenue, margin, headcount, or ARR. Without it, every dashboard, planning model, and AI copilot is free to invent its own definitions — and they will.

For AI in particular, the semantic layer is non-negotiable. LLMs are excellent at reasoning over well-defined structures and terrible at guessing what a poorly-named table represents. Invest in the semantic layer before you invest in the copilot.
